PLASTIC MULCH INSTALLATION GUIDE

Practical preparation and installation considerations for South African growers.

Prepare the bed before laying film

Create a smooth, firm and even bed without stones, stalks or sharp material that can puncture the film. Complete soil preparation and install the drip-irrigation line before the mulch is laid.

Install under suitable conditions

Avoid laying mulch in strong wind. Position the roll squarely, keep alignment consistent and apply enough tension to remove loose folds without overstretching the film.

Secure the edges correctly

Bury or anchor both edges evenly so wind cannot lift the mulch. Inadequate anchoring allows movement that can tear the film around holes, bed edges and soil contact points.

Protect the film during planting

  • Use the specified punched-hole layout where possible.
  • Avoid dragging tools across the film.
  • Repair accidental tears before wind enlarges them.
  • Check irrigation flow and plant openings after installation.

Specify the film before ordering

Confirm colour, width, length, micron, punched-hole size and spacing, roll quantity and delivery destination. Installation quality and the correct specification work together; a well-formulated film can still fail prematurely if it is overstretched, poorly anchored or mechanically damaged.

Read the mulch-film specification guide.
